Some commissions do not belong in a catalogue. A clutch for one evening, a bag that exists because someone described it and nobody had made it yet. We build these one at a time, we do not photograph them for the site unless the client agrees, and we never make the same one twice.

The Custom Clutch
For one evening, or for every evening after it.
An evening clutch is the purest test of skin selection there is. There is nowhere to hide a seam, nowhere to run a panel that does not match, and the whole object is small enough to be read at arm's length. We cut these from the centre of the belly where the tiles are most symmetrical, and we will wait for the right skin rather than start on a near-enough one. Frame, clasp, chain and interior are all specified by you.

The Custom Bag
Describe it. If it can be built by hand, we will build it.
This is where most of our longest commissions begin — a shape someone has carried for thirty years and cannot replace, a bag built around a specific object, a proportion that does not exist ready-made. We start with drawings, move to a calfskin prototype you can hold, and only cut crocodile or alligator once the prototype is right. The prototype stage is why these take the time they do, and it is not optional.

How a commission goes

Five steps, and a prototype you can hold

The conversation
You describe it — in words, a photograph, or a sketch on the back of something. We ask the awkward questions early: what goes in it, how it will be carried, what has failed on the last one.

The drawing
We draw it to scale and send it back. This is the cheapest point at which to change your mind, so we would rather go round three times here than once at the bench.

The prototype
On bags, a full calfskin prototype you can hold, load and carry. On clutches, a mock-up in the same proportions. Nothing exotic is cut until this is right.

The skin
We source and select for your piece specifically. On a difficult shape this is the step that sets the timeline, because the right skin arrives when it arrives.

The bench
Cut, skived, lined and hand saddle-stitched. One pair of hands from start to finish, and their initials go on the inside.
